Despite unrelenting attempts by the mainstream media and anti-borders proponents to present President Trump’s efforts to restore law and order in the American immigration system as un-American, economically damaging and even unconstitutional, voters continue to disagree with their narrative.
This was most recently exhibited by the public’s positive response to a speech the president gave in Iowa, where he declared that those wishing to immigrate into the U.S. “must be able to support themselves financially.” He continued by proposing “new immigration rules which say those seeking admission into our country must be able to support themselves financially, and should not use welfare for a period of at least five years.”
An independent-from-the-media polling organization, Rasmussen, which almost perfectly predicted the popular vote in the 2016 election cycle, released survey results indicating that 62 percent of likely voters agreed with the president’s position. Only 26 percent disagreed, with 12 percent undecided.
Both the Hill and CNN were quick to point out that a form of this welfare restriction already exists – the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Act of 1996. The legislation, signed by former President Bill Clinton, was originally intended to make immigrants ineligible to receive “means-tested public benefits” for a period of five years after they entered the country, among other welfare reforms.
However, as has often been the case with immigration, just because a law is on the books doesn’t mean the federal government will necessarily enforce it. The media conveniently ignores this fact. In fact, the Obama administration systematically dismantled and neutered the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Act by exploiting loopholes and simply ignoring other areas of the legislation. In addition, the former president was brazenly open about it, stating, “we’re going to look every single day to figure out what we can do without Congress.”
American voters are still recovering from the worst recession in decades. It’s understandable that they would feel betrayed by the federal government welcoming those immigrants who are unable to support themselves by immediately offering handouts funded by their hard-earned tax dollars. Rather, voters want an immigration system that favors applicants who have demonstrated an ability to further American interests and strengthen our economy.
President Trump wants to tighten legislation in order to protect the fiscal interests of American citizens and working legal residents, and protect those measures from the whims of an out-of-control executive branch. The media should applaud that desire rather than dismiss it as unnecessary.

I teach adults learning English. Many of them only attend class because they are required to. While there, they ignore instruction and play on their phones, disrupting the learning process for those who WANT to be citizens.

This government has been doing this for years. Many of the immigrants from Russia and other countries are supposed to only be able to able to support themselves along with any relative they sponsor. If they bring in a grandparent and they need medical attention the sponsor is responsible for all of their needs but it seem to only be the taxpayers that hit with their medical bills. If the sponsor claims that they can’t cover the bills guess who gets stuck with it. Another thing too is they are given SSI almost as soon as they get here. From what I found out I thought none of them can collect SSI before 5 years but I think many of them apply for it long before 5 years and start collecting it when that runs out they apply for SS which is the main reason that the the government keeps bringing up that SS is going to run out in less that 15 years, What this government has been doing is taking in immigrants for the past 50 years without letup until now the money to support them is running out. That is the major reason that Trump is talking about not allowing in anyone that can’t support themselves the day they arrive. The refugees are the same thing they will be hung around the taxpayers necks from the day they get off the plane. This is what is going on in Europe except in the Eastern block countries like Poland who has put up high fences with the military patrolling it 24 7.

There are lots of laws on the books regarding illegal aliens & how they shall be treated here in the US. What our former leaders (0bama, Bush, Bush & Clinton) have done is totally IGNORED those laws or they have twisted the words or “language” regarding ALL of those laws to benefit illegal aliens & NOT LEGAL US CITIZENS. I have a friend – of Irish descent – that could not get a job anywhere – until he changed his name to something of a Hispanic origin – then all of a sudden – he was getting job offers from everyone – it wasn’t the money he was looking for – but he was happy as hell to have a job. He told me that it really sucked to have it this way – where he had to have a Hispanic name to get reasonable work in his field – which happened to be in the construction field…………which is the field they flood with illegalness.
It was our liberal Congress and federal government that set up the terrible welfare programs. Recently, there have been several states that tie rules to seek employment and to establish other restrictions that force these parasites to seek work. The numbers of welfare dropped dramtically after establishing these rules. MN is still number 1 for welfare.

My immigrant ancestors did not receive any form of public assistance ! In FACT, they couldn’t even come to this country unless they were in perfect health and had someone here who was sponsoring them and would take full responsibility for them.
If all of these “compassionate organizations” and churches want to sponsor these immigrants and take FULL FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY for their food, clothes, housing, health insurance and jobs, them fine! go ahead and sponsor them. But don’t think that you can just pay for their one-way passage and then expect the rest of us to pick up the tab from thereon in !!!!!

When an illegal alien enters this country, it’s the citizens who pay the price in more ways than one… When they enter the country our disgusting politicians have been handing them more and more of OUR rights and benefits.. Well said ! You really nailed it. Far to many of our elected officials in BOTH political parties were more than willing to sell their soul and their country for money, power and votes. Nothing proves this more than the immigration issue on both legal and illegal immigrants. Illegal colonization is changing the culture and language of our nation. We may have already passed the point of no return.
Immigrants who HAVE NOT paid into the our Tax system are in NO WAY Eligible for ANY benefits period ! The State and FEDERAL Government need to do their DAMN jobs and enforce the laws that have been on the books for Years. . . I am so sick of these idiots acting like Dictators. This will NOT stop until we start SCREAMING and voting these people out of office and taking away their ENTITLEMENTS for not Serving the Citizens of the U.S. that PAY their wages ! ! !
