Another Headscratching Comment from an Open Borders Politician

Last month, on the same day that the Supreme Court was hearing oral arguments about the constitutionality of Arizona’s SB 1070 immigration law, Mexican President Felipe Calderon was speaking to more than 200 Mexican immigrants at a community center in Houston as part of a daylong visit.

During his speech, Mr. Calderon said the following:

“I want to be very clear. We are respectful of U.S. sovereignty. But we have to be firmly against those initiatives that tend to criminalize those that are not committing a crime.”

Huh? If Mr. Calderon respects U.S. sovereignty, then he also respects U.S. law which is pretty clear that illegally crossing the U.S. border is a criminal offense punishable by fine and prison time.

While U.S. immigration laws receive widespread criticism from special interest groups and foreign politicians, it is always a sobering reminder how much tougher immigration laws are in other countries, in particular Mexico.

Mr. Calderon has every right to enforce immigration laws in his country, but it is more than just a diplomatic faux-pas for Mr. Calderon to criticize U.S. immigration policy while speaking in Houston. it is a direct insult to the American people for him to ignore the fact that millions of his country’s citizens are intent on violating U.S. law, and not just our immigration law.
