More on Cruz’s New Immigration Position
“Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz vowed to deport immigrants living illegally in the United States and build a wall to keep others out, sharpening his stance on the issue a week before presidential contests in several southern states. Cruz’s comments on the eve of Tuesday’s Nevada caucuses came hours after the public firing of his main spokesman over misleading social media postings involving rival Marco Rubio,” Reuters reports.
New Orleans Police Adopt Sanctuary Rules
“The New Orleans Police Department is planning to take steps that would provide some relief from anxiety for undocumented immigrants living in the city. Starting Sunday, police in the city will no longer be required to check the immigration status of people they encounter who they suspect of being in the country illegally, and nobody in the city will be required to prove their citizenship to officers,” IBTimes.com says.
Melania Trump Says She Followed the Law
“In a rare television appearance, Melania Trump batted down claims that her husband, GOP front-runner Donald Trump, insulted immigrants, saying she was a legal immigrant herself,” UPI reports.
“‘I followed the law,’ Melania told MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski Wednesday morning. ‘I never thought to stay here without papers. I had a visa, I traveled every few months back to the country to Slovenia to stamp the visa. I came back, I applied for the green card, I applied for the citizenship later on after many years of green card. So I went by system, I went by the law. And you should do that, you should not just say let me stay here and whatever happens, happens.’”
Legal and Illegal Immigrants Pay Taxes But They Cost a Lot
“Do undocumented immigrants pay taxes? It’s a question that a lot of American voters are asking as immigration takes center stage in the 2016 presidential election, and filing our taxes stays on the back burner until 11pm on Monday, April 18 (but who’s counting?) They short answer is yes: the estimated 10.9 million immigrants in the U.S. illegally pay taxes. Lots of taxes, according to a new study by the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy that focuses on state and local taxes (not the federal income tax),” LatinTimes.com says.
Attorney General Says ICE Won’t Release Prisoners to Most Sanctuary Cities
“The Obama administration is winning praise from conservative Republicans for initiating a change in federal policy that could encourage so-called sanctuary cities to abandon their stance against cooperating with deportation requests,” Politico says.
“Under the new policy, the federal Bureau of Prisons will put prisoners finishing their sentences into immigration custody by default when immigration authorities seek deportation, even if local or state officials want the immigrant for prosecution or to finish a state or local sentence. Immigration officials may sometimes defer to state or local authorities, but will take into account a locality’s cooperation with federal deportation requests in deciding whether to hand over a prisoner.”
