TN Attorney General Says Non-Citizens Can Be Poll-Watchers

“The state’s attorney general says pending state legislation that would prohibit non-U.S. citizens, regardless of their immigration status, from working at or even entering polling places is ‘constitutionally suspect,'” the Tennessean reports.

“In an opinion released Wednesday, Tennessee Attorney General Robert Cooper says House Bill 985, sponsored by Rep. Judd Matheny, R-Tullahoma, and Sen. Mike Bell, R-Riceville, would probably violate the equal protection clause of the 14th amendment despite the arguments of some backers.”

“Given the enormity of the changes that would result from comprehensive immigration reform, Senate Democrats wouldn’t try to rush a bill through the Judiciary Committee before the public gets a chance to know what’s in it — would they? In the past few days, even though proposed reform legislation from the so-called Gang of Eight hasn’t even been written, there have been strong indications that that’s exactly what Democrats intend to do,” says Byron York at the Examiner.
