In getting himself arrested last night in front of the White House, Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.) fancies himself as the Martin Luther King or Mahatma Gandhi of our era. In reality, he demonstrated, once again, that he is the rightful heir to the legacy of P.T. Barnum.
This latest incident is nothing more than a cheap stunt, the objective of which is to make Gutierrez a political player. Gutierrez’s goal is to ultimately reward with a blanket amnesty those that have broken and continue to break our immigration laws.
His arrest was reported on FoxNews.com, however, Gutierrez is no stranger to jails or controversies over his single obsession over amnesty. In addition to being arrested in May 2010 at the White House during a demonstration, in 2009, in the midst of a congressional debate over a taxpayer-funded $800 billion stimulus, Gutierrez took to the road with members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus in a multi-city tour to push for a comprehensive amnesty for illegal aliens, all on the heels of asking the American people to sacrifice in order to push through Congress the largest spending increase in several generations.
Dr. King and Gandhi used civil disobedience to fight against laws and policies that denied people their legitimate inalienable rights. Blacks were American citizens who were denied rights based on the color of their skin, while Indians were subject to imperial rule and wanted their independence. Gutierrez is trying to equate those struggles to a politically motivated effort to force America to reward people who broke into our country. While Gutierrez’s tactics are the same, that is where the similarity ends.
The needs and interests of Gutierrez’s constituents have clearly taken a back seat to his one-issue crusade. Rather than continue taking the fine people of Chicago for a ride, Gutierrez might consider resigning his seat and becoming a full-time amnesty activist. This way his constituents and American taxpayers won’t get stuck with the bill next time he has to be bailed out of jail. Then again, as P.T. Barnum once said “There’s a sucker born every minute.”

It’s costing America over 300 billion a year for entitlements, welfare, medical, lock up etc for these criminals, so don’t tell me it would cost more to round them up and deport them!

This is a joke. Why do these representatives think we want milions of more illegals crossing our border. Giving amnesty 26 years ago only promoted millions more to come! No amnesty, no dream act, lower immigration levels, take care of our 22 million people out of work, our homeless, our elderly, our handicapped. If we can do that our country will be back on track!
SOON AFTER HIS FIRST ELECTION, HE WAS ARRESTED ON THE KENNEDY EXPRESSWAY, SPEEDING. HE SCREAMED AT THE OFFICERS THEY DIDN’T KNOW WHO THEY WERE DEALING WITH. HE WAS DRUNK. HE HASN’T CHANGED. Unfortunately, most of this administration, including Obama, Holder and Napolitano don’t feel it necessary to enforce the rule of existing law and prefer to “fix” what is not “broken”!!! Please don’t give this administration or their cohorts any backbone by using the term “reform”. Use the terms “ATTRITION THRU ENFORCEMENT” so that the elected’s realize we have not been bamboozled by their “comprehensive immigration REFORM” terminology.

i dont understand why he is allowed to stay in office while breaking our laws. our goverment is so corrupt that politicans can do anything they want and get by without ever going to jail or paying fines. am afraid we will never have a honest goverment or america again, its will be MEXAMERICA soon.

I agree there needs to be reform to the current immigration system. I do not agree that the illegals are the kind of people we want to keep in our country. If they did not follow the rules with this, the most important process for legal immigration, what makes anyone think they will follow any other rules they feel don’t pertain to them! Gutierrez should give up his seat. It is apparent he is not fighting to help the people of the United States of America.

I agree we must reform the immigration system, but blanket amnesty for all is not the answer. I am a individual who is trying to work through the system legally to get my wife here from south america, and amnesty does not help those in the legal system already. It just gives everyone here illegally a pass for coming here. we need to streamline the process for people who already are fighting the system legally, and paying the price in both time and money. Reform the entire system..
j quirk: It is unfortunate that your wife is currently in South America and that it has taken so long for her to find her way to the United States of America legally; however, obstacles should exist for those seeking to become citizens of the United States of America. Citizenship is not a right; it is a privilege and should be difficult to obtain.

Your use of the term “reform” leads me to believe you feel our current immigration system is broken and in need of repair. Attrition thru enforcement of existing immigration laws would “fix” our “broken” system. Another step in the right direction would be to pass Rep. Lamar Smith’s bill (HR 2164). This bill mandates the use of E-Verify which would immediately remove the jobs magnet and consequently force millions upon millions of these illegal aliens to self-deport.
